Understanding Colors for the Watercolorist
10 Week Workshop

Charlene Collins Freeman

Tuesdays 9:30am - 12:30pm
January 8 - March 12, 2019

$275

Designed to help watercolor artists understand both color theory and paint properties, we will explore the properties of watercolor pigments (transparent, opaque, staining, fugitive, granulating, on my!) and we will look at different ways of mixing color (on the palette, on the paper, wet-into-wet, glazing).  We will experiment with color temperature, value, and intensity of pigments. We will learn about the advantages of painting with a limited palette and we will make a lot of color charts in the process.

We will play with formulas that work well for specific subjects (skies, skin, shadows). We will explore how to match colors and study classic compatible palettes (colors that work well together in a painting). We will look at the emotions of colors and explore the use of color through art history.

Drawing and Sketching Maps
Anya Toomre

Wednesdays 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

March 6 - April 10 (6 weeks)

$190

Are you captivated by maps? Maps are everywhere and there are so many different types. They help to find our way, orientate ourselves, tell a story, visualize a path, and identify where things are. They can be personal or shared with others.

This 6-week workshop will explore different types of illustrative maps that we can draw. Your project will be to draw a place of a place that you know well and are connected to. It can be your home or neighborhood, home state, home country, favorite vacation spot, your garden, or favorite walk with your dog. Any place is okay as long as it is a place you know and love. Illustrating a map tells a story of a place that’s important to you. It’s a thing of beauty but also conveys useful information.

I will be using a sketchbook with ink and watercolor but you can use the materials you are comfortable with.  Design elements and considerations of map design will be addressed and discussed throughout the workshop with plenty of examples of illustrated maps. There will also be plenty of time each week to work on creating your personal illustrated map.

 All skill levels welcome.

Join the original urban sketcher, Seattle-area artist and journalist Gabi Campanario, for a weekend of learning and exploration around the revitalized downtown of Bothell, Washington.

“Urban Sketching Bothell” consists of a combination of indoor demonstrations at Cloud9 and practical field sketching sessions at nearby scenic locales such as Bothell Landing, the historic Anderson School McMenamins Hotel and Bothell Country Village.

Lessons taught by Campanario will emphasize creating accurate depictions of urban spaces and human activity and infusing the artwork with a unique personal style. Topics will include choosing and framing subjects, identifying shapes, measuring dimensions and angles and other key steps to make lively sketches that capture a moment and a sense of place.

The workshop is designed for people who have some drawing experience but are not used to drawing from life -or on the fly- directly from observation. This intensive, weekend-long experience is ideal for drawing enthusiasts interested in documenting the world around them and professionals in the fields of design, illustration or architecture who want to refresh or expand their visual skills.Space is limited to 12 attendees, register early to secure your spot!
