We offer the following art classes & camps for kids and teens and we are always adding more. Check back often to see new offerings.

CLASSES: Students sign up month to month for ongoing classes. Classes run September through June although students can start up at any time. We know life gets busy. You are free to stop taking the ongoing classes and start up again as your schedule allows.

CAMPS: Camps are different from ongoing classes in that the camps are for a limited time, usually winter break, spring break and summer camps. Camps are taught by Cloud 9 instructors and by visiting instructors.

Weekly art classes for

In these weekly art classes kids will be exposed to famous and local artists while focusing on different mediums each quarter. Classes will begin with 15 minute drawing exercises designed to improve drawing skills. Each week students will attempt a structured step by step art tutorial and then set free to create their own project using their new found techniques and skills. Artists will be required to bring their own art supplies. Each student having their own supplies means they can continue their practice at home. Supplies are listed on the registration page.

How to Conquer Your Novel in November

Editing Your Writing

During this six week writing course we'll spend time working with a first draft piece of writing, helping the writer clean up and edit into something they can query to agents or publishers. We'll discuss how to write an effective query letter, and spend time discussing editing, what to look for in a second draft, and reading out loud during class (for those who feel comfortable to do so).

In this session for adults and teens we learn to identify and see values in existing paintings and compositions, construct a value scale, and how to experiment with value patterns in tiny thumbnails as a foundation to a strong composition.

This series of workshops teaches skills and concepts that are applicable to any type of art making: any medium, any subject and any project, from a single painting, to a gallery series, to an entire children’s book or portfolio. These are the skills that artists utilize to create strong images. Come stretch your artistic sensibilities with professional illustrator, Tara Larsen Chang.

In the Fundamentals series, Tara will cover some of the foundational concepts necessary to produce creative and impactful art and illustration. Three mini-workshops, each 3 weeks long  are prerequisites for taking the advanced Visual Story-Telling workshop, unless you have samples of your work that demonstrate that you are familiar with the concepts being covered. Appropriate for all skill levels with some art experience background. Not appropriate for complete beginners. Workshop open to adults and teens.

Do you enjoy the whimsical appeal of pop-up cards as they magically unfold into a 3-D piece of art? In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to create Fall Holiday themed pop-ups, also known as paper engineering.

This workshop will cover the tools, materials, and basic techniques – including forms, folds, scores, creases, and fastening – behind this unique art form. Step-by-step instructions will be provided on how to apply the basic techniques to achieve the “pop” mechanisms that bring your designs to life. You will be able to follow along and make several of your own cards in class that you can keep or give as gifts.

All skill levels welcome. Please note: Some of the pop-up cards will require the use of an X-ACTO knife and some cards can be cut entirely with scissors.

We will progress from initial concepts to studies and comprehensives, to finished piece. At the end of the workshop we will celebrate with an exhibit featuring the finished work by the participants.

Beginning Colored Pencil Techniques Adults and teenagers 15+

This is a five-week colored pencil class for absolute beginners.  The primary purpose of the class is to become familiar with the various materials used in colored pencil drawings and to learn basic colored pencil techniques.  Students will start by learning levels of pressure used while coloring and learning a variety of stokes to achieve a desired texture, then applying these skills to a drawing.  Students will also be introduced to blending colors to create pictures images with depth and interest.  We will explore the various types of solvents used to blend colors and use of under-painting techniques used by various artists.  

Pictured references will be provided to help students combine these techniques into a finished picture.
