We offer the following art classes & camps for kids and teens and we are always adding more. Check back often to see new offerings.

CLASSES: Students sign up month to month for ongoing classes. Classes run September through June although students can start up at any time. We know life gets busy. You are free to stop taking the ongoing classes and start up again as your schedule allows.

CAMPS: Camps are different from ongoing classes in that the camps are for a limited time, usually winter break, spring break and summer camps. Camps are taught by Cloud 9 instructors and by visiting instructors.

Leela’s classes will help young artists to explore their creative spirit and build up their confidence as an artist. Through new mediums and fun art projects students will get to refine their art skills in an encouraging and focused environment. Classes run month to month, register per full month, beginning with the first Wednesday of each month and continuing until the last Wednesday.

Your registration pays for your slot in the class, make ups are generally not available.

All classes require preregistration and prepayment. Registration made with less than 24 hours notice may not be accommodated.

DRAWING THE HUMAN HEAD & FACIAL EXPRESSIONS FOR ADULTS & TEENS

Designed to artists understand how to see like an artist, discover the value of light and shadow and how to draw the human face.

We will work in sketchbooks, learning exercises to improve our ability to see and draw with creative exercises. Emphasis will be placed on developing a basic understanding of visual anatomy. Subjects will include proportion and construction of the head, drawing facial features and mapping lights and darks. Each of the lessons will introduce new ideas and exercises, and challenge you to think about this tricky subject in new ways.  You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Topics covered will include use of pressure, types of strokes, color layering, blending and under-painting techniques.  I will provide exercises and pictured references at will allow you to learn and apply the technique to images you want create.

Are you interested in the art of drawing for children's books? In this class you can work on your own picture book project by creating a dummy book to send to a publisher or agent for possible publication and or as a gift to family and friends. You can illustrate your own story for kids or choose an existing folktale or favorite story.

Also you have the option of creating new portfolio pieces for the children's book market. The bonus with this class is each week Craig will be available for one online feedback session when you scan or photograph your work and email it to him.

This is a ten week workshop. Class is held at Cloud 9 every other week (on the dates listed above). The alternate weeks the course is online.

Creative Writing

Cost: $90 This six-week workshop will introduce students to creative writing through free writing and different elements of storytelling: prose, poetry, stream of consciousness, essays, and short stories.

The first class will be an introduction to both writing and class structure. Each class will include a half hour of free writing from provided prompts. After the first class, we will cover one method of creative writing each week. The workshop’s goal is to build confidence and love of the written word through creative writing.

Materials to bring: journal, notebook, pen, pencil, laptop, tablet, portable typewriter…

Homework each week will be daily writing in each element with the option to share at the next class.

Nature Watercolors

Sarah will walk students through full watercolor pieces, beginning with drawing the base image, and going step by step through an entire painting. Students will learn the process of creating a watercolor, which will include learning patience for painting in layers, taking careful time to create a piece of art, and learning how to use watercolors effectively.

We will look and learn from famous artists, studying different styles and techniques to produce at least one full piece each month. Images will tend to focus on animals and nature, chosen by Sarah. 

Students are encouraged to provide their own watercolor supplies: paper at least 9x12 inches, brushes, and paint palettes. Watercolor paper sketchbooks are also encouraged for practice of techniques.

Building Your Portfolio

Each week Tara will present a different concept with accompanying projects. Students can sign up week to week for however many sessions their schedules allow and end the summer with a number of projects for their portfolio. Students can also email Tara their final projects or WIPs along the way for feedback.

 Tara also offers a mentoring session 30 minutes after the portfolio session ends. Students of the portfolio class can attend the mentoring sessions and work with Tara on their projects for more working time and input.
