If you’ve ever traveled and spent your time away experiencing and exploring, chances are you took pictures to capture memories of your trip. Travel journaling takes it one step further and allows you to choose significant moments of the trip to draw and annotate and create a personal visual memory for you and others to enjoy. The process of creating is a big plus too!

Maybe you brought a sketchbook with you on your trip and got some sketches done, or not. A travel journal can be worked on before, during, and after any trip. A page or two can be enough to mark the event, or a whole sketchbook can be devoted to the topic.

This 6-week workshop will take you through different ways to start your travel journaling and record those memories. You should have photos from a trip you’ve taken that you’d like to work from to add to your travel journal. You will learn about ink and watercolor and drawing techniques, materials, ideas and strategies to travel journaling and will also have plenty of time to work on your journal.

All skill levels welcome.

6 weeks
October 28 – December 9, with Veteran’s Day (November 11) off

Are you captivated by maps? Maps are everywhere and there are so many different types. They help to find our way, orientate ourselves, tell a story, visualize a path, and identify where things are. They can be personal or shared with others.

This 6-week workshop will explore different types of illustrative and metaphorical maps that we can draw. Traditional map elements will be addressed as well as making the maps personal and informative. One of the projects will be to draw a place that you know well and are connected to. Illustrating a map tells a story of a place that’s important to you. It’s a thing of beauty but also conveys useful information.

I will be using a sketchbook with ink and watercolor but you can use the materials you are comfortable with. Considerations of map design will be addressed and discussed throughout the workshop with many examples of illustrated maps.

charlene collins freeman

Wednesdays 10am - 12:30pm
April 29 - June 3

Designed to inspire and create the habit of keeping a sketchbook, this course will focus on sketching to understand our materials and master techniques, to capture our day to day life, and to sketch people, architecture and nature.

But mostly, in this workshop, I hope to encourage you to use sketchbooking as a way to be creative every day.

Each of the lessons of our workshop offers drawing practice exercises, introduces a new material or technique, or challenges you to work on a particular theme.  You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting, where experimentation and play are encouraged while techniques and observation are emphasized.

This workshop is an opportunity to start on a garden journal that can allow you to appreciate the garden you have now and to be useful for your gardening in the future.

I will be using ink and watercolor with graphite in a sketchbook, but you are welcome to use whatever kind of medium you’d like that will work in a sketchbook: colored ink, colored pencil, watercolor pencil, watercolors, etc. As we get closer to September, I’ll ask that you collect some pictures from your garden to use during the first class.

Learn to Draw by Copying the Masters
charlene collins freeman

Mondays 11am - 1pm

Starts September 9, 2019

$125/month

You can register for classes month to month. You can join at any time and stop and start up again as your schedule allows.

Drawing is the foundation of the visual arts and anyone can learn to draw! This class will build a solid foundation of drawing skills to strengthen your ability to express your creativity!

Copying old masters' drawings is a time-tested discipline. The experience of copying from numerous master artists, not only exposes students to classical drawing techniques, but also to the masters' thinking process. You can also learn how the artist developed an idea from beginning to end. To reap this benefit, however, you can't just engage in mindless copying.

In this drawing class we will  explore why the artist did this or that, and why it works. If you can pinpoint specific strategies used in the drawings, then you can transfer these techniques to your own works of art. It's a fun way to learn about the masters and to improve your own drawing skills.

All skill levels welcome.

Iphoneography
Mukul Soman

Saturday & Sunday
September 7 & 8
10:00am - 4:00pm with a one hour break each day

$200 (Enter discount code SIZLFCY for $25 off exclusively for Cloud 9 students!)

Come learn how to take outstanding photos with your phone! With photography, sometimes you can get lost in the world of the camera while losing sight of the fact that what really matters first is your eye and then only, the equipment. This philosophy is what made me pick up my iPhone every now and then, disconnect from the crazy technical side of photography, and just focus on the actual act of making a photograph.

More than it being just about using your phone camera to make beautiful images, my workshop focuses on sharing what I have learned over the years that will help you in developing your eye and learning to follow your instinct when it come to capturing moments. And using a simple phone camera is just a way to disconnect you from all those technical things, allowing you to just focus on framing, composing, lighting and subject matter/story. For a fun filled two days of photography chats and field work, register yourself for my workshop

Students must bring a mobile phone with at least an 8 MP camera running either IOS or Android (preferably an iPhone 5 or later versions)
