Create an Ink & Watercolor Travel Journal
Anya Toomre

Thursdays 10:00 am – 12:30 pm
6 weeks with Thanksgiving (Nov 28) off
October 31, November 7, 14, 21, December 5 & 12

$195

If you’ve ever traveled and spent your time away experiencing and exploring, chances are you took pictures to capture memories of your trip. Travel journaling takes it one step further and allows you to choose significant moments of the trip to draw and annotate and create a personal visual memory for you and others to enjoy. The process of creating is a big plus too!

Maybe you brought a sketchbook with you on your trip and got some sketches done, or not. A travel journal can be worked on before, during, and after any trip. A page or two can be enough to mark the event, or a whole sketchbook can be devoted to the topic.

This 6-week workshop will take you through different ways to start your travel journaling and record those memories. You should have photos from a trip you’ve taken that you’d like to work from to add to your travel journal. You will learn about ink and watercolor and drawing techniques, materials, ideas and strategies to travel journaling and will also have plenty of time to work on your journal.

All skill levels welcome.

Drawing and Sketching Maps
Anya Toomre

Mondays 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
6 weeks
October 28 – December 9, with Veteran’s Day (November 11) off

 $195

Are you captivated by maps? Maps are everywhere and there are so many different types. They help to find our way, orientate ourselves, tell a story, visualize a path, and identify where things are. They can be personal or shared with others.

This 6-week workshop will explore different types of illustrative and metaphorical maps that we can draw. Traditional map elements will be addressed as well as making the maps personal and informative. One of the projects will be to draw a place that you know well and are connected to. Illustrating a map tells a story of a place that’s important to you. It’s a thing of beauty but also conveys useful information.

I will be using a sketchbook with ink and watercolor but you can use the materials you are comfortable with. Considerations of map design will be addressed and discussed throughout the workshop with many examples of illustrated maps.

All skill levels welcome.

Keeping a Sketchbook Journal
Adults & Teens
Charlene Collins Freeman

Saturdays 10:30am - 12:30pm
February 1 - March 7

$180

Sketchbooks can be an exciting investigation into art techniques and ideas but even more so, a wonderful way to record your life.  A sketchbook can have many roles in an artist’s practice but mostly, in this workshop, I hope to encourage you to use sketchbooking as a way to be creative every day.

A visual journal is a place where you learn about techniques and materials while recording the world around you.

It is for nobody else’s eyes but your own, unless you choose to share. No matter what your level of experience is, give your inner artist a little breathing room by developing a non judgmental sketchbook practice.

Pages can be beautiful in their simplicity or take on the aesthetic of a polished piece. And it can be one way on one page and then another way on the next. Don’t box yourself in. The point of the sketchbook is above all to create and record your thoughts, your feelings, your life!

You can be flowery or decorative on one page and not on the next. You do not need to spend time adding borders; sweating over the annotation or working obsessively over pages again and again. The sketchbook is NOT meant to be a complete book of finished artworks and illustrations; it is meant to be creative document of exploration and recording what is important to you at the moment.

We will learn about drawing, ink and watercolor while exploring various subjects.

All skill levels welcome.

Sketchbook Workshop
charlene collins freeman

Wednesdays 10am - 12:30pm
April 29 - June 3

$180

Designed to inspire and create the habit of keeping a sketchbook, this course will focus on sketching to understand our materials and master techniques, to capture our day to day life, and to sketch people, architecture and nature.

Sketchbooks should be an exciting investigation of media, techniques and ideas.  A sketchbook can have many roles in an artist’s practice. In this workshop we are using it as a playground of visual ideas, a place to let your muse take over, and a workhorse for developing skills: drawing, observation, annotating, exploring, reflecting. But mostly, in this workshop, I hope to encourage you to use sketchbooking as a way to be creative every day.

Each of the lessons of our workshop offers drawing practice exercises, introduces a new material or technique, or challenges you to work on a particular theme.  You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting, where experimentation and play are encouraged while techniques and observation are emphasized.

Beyond Basics will run six week 1st & 3rd Tuesdays

October 15, November 5 & 19

6:00pm - 8:30pm

$25/class or Full Session $120

Learn to Draw by Copying the Masters
charlene collins freeman

Mondays 11am - 1pm

$125/month

You can register for classes month to month. You can join at any time and stop and start up again as your schedule allows.

Copying old masters' drawings is a time-tested discipline. The experience of copying from numerous master artists, not only exposes students to classical drawing techniques, but also to the masters' thinking process. You can also learn how the artist developed an idea from beginning to end. To reap this benefit, however, you can't just engage in mindless copying.

In this drawing class we will  explore why the artist did this or that, and why it works. If you can pinpoint specific strategies used in the drawings, then you can transfer these techniques to your own works of art. It's a fun way to learn about the masters and to improve your own drawing skills.

All skill levels welcome.

Eileen walks us through it in manageable and fun steps. You will learn watercolor and colored pencil application tips, and how to extract the best qualities of each medium in this fun and informative workshop.

Please note that the image shown in this listing is not the image of the project you will do during this workshop. Eileen puts together a new project for all her workshops. Understanding Colors for the Watercolorist
charlene collins freeman

Wednesdays 10am- 12:30pm
January 8 - February 26

$250

Designed to help watercolor artists understand both color theory and paint properties, we will explore the properties of watercolor pigments (transparent, opaque, staining, fugitive, granulating, on my!) and we will look at different ways of mixing color (on the palette, on the paper, wet-into-wet, glazing).  We will experiment with color temperature, value, and intensity of pigments. We will learn about the advantages of painting with a limited palette and we will make a lot of color charts in the process.

We will play with formulas that work well for specific subjects (skies, skin, shadows). We will explore how to match colors and study classic compatible palettes (colors that work well together in a painting). We will look at the emotions of colors and explore the use of color through art history.

Each of the lessons of our workshop will introduce new ideas and exercises, new paints, techniques, and challenge you to think about color in new ways.  You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting, where experimentation and play are encouraged while techniques and observation are emphasized.

All skill levels welcome.
