Urban Sketching Bothell with Gabi Campanario

This past weekend Cloud 9 hosted a fantastic urban sketching workshop with the original Urban Sketcher, Gabriel Campanario. This Urban Sketching workshop explored Bothell, Washington, a lovely northwest river town (and home to Cloud 9)!

We kicked-off the workshop on Friday evening with an introduction to urban sketching by Gabi and a talk by Bothell Historical Society & Museum volunteers who shared old photos and stories about the city’s early days.

Gabi created this map of sketching sites for the weekend.

We sketched the construction in progress on Main Street and the entrance to the historic Anderson School building, which was renovated in recent years and now houses a McMenamins hotel and movie theater.

We also got a private tour of the Bothell Historical Society & Museum, where we made fast sketches of Victorian-era heirlooms.

The focus of Gabi's teaching and demos on Saturday was on composition, sight measuring, linework and tone. The weather was chilly, but the sun came out to give us nice light and shadows and warm us up just when we needed.

Each participant received two complimentary sketchbooks courtesy of Stillman & Birn, a medium-size sketchbook (5.5” x 8.5”) and a pocket-size (3.5” X 5.5”).  (Gabi excels at making  any kind of scene fit on the pages of the pocket-size sketchbook and we will be offering a workshop on that soon!)

On Sunday, Gabi's demos focused on watercolor techniques for painting on location. After a few demos in class, we headed out again to sketch Bothell's Main Street. In the afternoon we took a mini-field trip to Bothell Country Village, where we sketched for a few hours and were joined by other Urban Sketchers.

Thank you Gabi for a great Urban Sketchers workshop this weekend. We are putting more urban sketching workshops with Gabi on the Cloud 9 schedule. We hope you join us for future editions of the class in this charming northwest river town (we didn’t sketch the river this time but, hey, one sketch at a time, right? )
